On April 29, the International day of dance, the internet platform for professional dance “DANCE.LV žurnāls” will celebrate five years since its being in circulation, and this event is going to be honoured by Dance artists’ awards ceremony, a master-class of dance criticism in Riga and an international creative dance lab in Viljandi, in Estonia.

As part of Dance day 2016 program, the “DANCE.LV žurnāls” platform invites those who are interested in the trade to attend a master-class titled ‘To Write a Dance’ to be held on Sunday, April 24 at 11-00 in the premises of the dance studio Dzirnas, Hall A (on Lāčplēša street 106/108). During this master-class, the participants will play a game of observing and writing, applying instruments aimed to enhance the pleasure of the process of playing. Each participant will create, follow and analyse their personal dance performance, which will be rounded off by a group discussion together with other participants and executive team of “DANCE.LV žurnāls” in order to reflect on acquired experience and on the challenges encountered in the process.  The master-class will be held by the board of “DANCE.LV žurnāls” editors – Inta Balode, Dita Jonīte and Maija Uzula-Petrovska. To apply for this master-class, contact the platform on info@dejasdiena.lv.

The “DANCE.LV žurnāls” editing board will visit Viljandi on April 25-29 to participate in the third laboratory of international collaborative grid ‘The Writing Movement Network’, planned to focus this time on the theme of audience and the market. Representatives of five countries are to partake in the lab – altogether ten participants who will watch the performances of the Dance Week Festival and enter the dialogue with their creators as well as write about dance joining their efforts with Viljandi high school students as well as discuss the presented performances and results of their writing.  This project is developed as a collaboration of Viljandi Culture Academy, Koidu Residence Centre, Viljandi Gymnasium and Dance Week Festival. In 2015 and 2016, “DANCE.LV žurnāls” is the acting coordinator for the Baltic Nordic ‘Writing Movement Network’ – a partnership started in 2012 as part of the project  ‘kedja Writing Movement’ when the principal organization was Dance House Norway in Oslo. The network is supported by the Nordic-Baltic mobility program ‘Culture’.

This anniversary celebration will culminate for “DANCE.LV žurnāls” in the summit event of the Dance day 2016 when its guests are going to be invited to ‘A Feast of Dance’ starting at 21-00 on April 29 in the Ģertrūdes Street Theatre (on Ģertrūdes street 101a) to feature a Dance artists award ceremony held by the editing board of ‘DANCEPUNKC’ to honour the professionals whose work has the most creatively influenced the content of its issues in this period.

DANCE.LV žurnāls” is a platform for analysis, discussions, and information exchange in the field of professional dance, addressing its most current processes, research, history, education, events and tendencies in Latvia as well as in its nearest and more remote surrounding countries. The site was created in 2011 and its fifth anniversary precisely coincides with the Day of Dance this year. “DANCE.LV žurnāls” accentuates the contemporary dance now observed to diversify increasingly in Latvia and to step outside its borders, at the same time, retaining an air of sometimes poorly understood and even misunderstood genre of art.  However, the editors of this publication choose to perceive the ‘contemporary’ as a wider concept – as a term to subsume the most current, innovative, ‘frame-refusing’ and inter-disciplinary processes in the professional art of dance in general.

DANCE.LV žurnāls” is supported financially by the State Foundation of Cultural Capital.
