How to measure the maturity of a performance? DanseFestival Barents in Hammerfest

How to measure the maturity of a performance? DanseFestival Barents in Hammerfest

Inta Balode

This text is inspired by a conversation with the participants of Baltic Nordic collaboration project “45+” gathering dancers over age of 45 who are still active in the field. My thoughts and impressions about the project are in two texts written after meetings in Riga during Time to Dance festival and Hammerfest during DanseFestival Barents: “Lifelong Dance Practice: Project 45+”and “Far north makes a project 45+ last longer”. In this text I will look at the program of DanseFestival Barents from the perspective of speculating about maturity of some of the works I saw. I believe that artistic maturity is not really the same as passport maturity. The inspiration to look at the festival program from this perspective comes from the statement I heard from “45+” group: “Young people could have never created work like this.” Continue reading

“You are provoking; you must be a journalist,” says one of the participants of the discussion after listening to couple of my questions to the group of choreographers of “45+” project gathered in their final lab in Hammerfest, Norway. Tonight “45+” members are discussing the future of the network. “It is good to ask questions but you are asking them to wrong people. Politicians are the ones to be asked!” he continues. I said that I have been doing also that and I know how complicated it is, how easy it is to make enemies just because of asking simple questions. At the same time, I believe that there are not wrong people to be asked. There are two reasons. First, I am interested in answers. Second, yes, I do provoke sometimes but it is for the sake of stimulating situations where I am more or less outsider. I am allowed to be the one thinking (or pretending to) think differently, to question and to doubt. “Ananda”: crossing the border between ritual and performance

“Ananda”: crossing the border between ritual and performance

Elena Angelova*

I entered the world of  “Ananda” (September 20, 2016) without any knowledge about it in advance: I walked the way lit with candles, drank from the Indian tea and thought that this is already an experience of integrity and sinking in a meditative, different from the every-day world environment. Right from the entrance there was the feeling of being part of a silent celebration, a moving in a place for sacral ritual. My knowledge about rituals is very limited, I barely knew that “Ananda” is the word for joy or luck in Sanskrit language. So there was an element of surprise when I entered in a world with much more than that. Continue reading

There are many great people taking care for the development of contemporary dance as well as Contact Improvisation (CI) in Latvia. Still, feels like the development happens slow and has a certain heaviness in itself: enthusiasts are running out of strength and passion. They step back, other enthusiasts come instead and “fight” for few years. In 10 years Eco Village has been created and developed in Israel (Vertigo Eco Art Village, which was founded by Vertigo Dance Company in 2005). Everyone has its own speed, of course. But I still have this question – can we increase capacity? A special friend of mine says: “Passion is needed.” Do we miss it? Or organizing skills? Or may be center is missing? Common center to hold? The dictionary of our bodily stereotypes. About “Hardly Ever”

The dictionary of our bodily stereotypes. About “Hardly Ever”

Why do we eat avocado, if it does not have any flavor?

It is everywhere!

Bananas. They are nice.

Our preset notions and reputed opinions are like avocado – tasteless fruits with buttery texture, which green and porous bark we usually peel and throw away in the litter. Therefore, the bone of avocado – chestnut brown core does not give any gastronomical pleasure; it belongs to other redundant components in recycle bin. However, why do we eat it? Why do we make salads using only the valuable part of it? In addition, can we answer to those questions that in every day we make mute? Moreover – do our stereotypes and notions exist only in our linguistic nature? Maybe patterns of them hide in our bodies? These questions highlighted choreographer  Francesco Scavetta and Norwegian contemporary dance company Wee in their newest performance Hardly ever, which was presented at dance house Zirgu pasts during the festival Time to dance (Laiks dejot). At the performance Hardly ever you can look as a miniature avocado dictionary, which you cannot read, instead – use through bodily experience. Continue reading

Lifelong Dance Practice: Project 45+

Lifelong Dance Practice: Project 45+
Print pagePDF page

With the support from Nordic Culture Point Mobility Programme Network Funding and partners from Estonia and Norway a very nice and cherished for a long time idea of Latvian choreographer Olga Žitluhina became possible. The idea is to bring together dancers and choreographers of the age from 45 years from different countries and do something new and creative with all power of experience and will of project participants. The thought found its realization within a project “Lifelong Dance Practice: Project 45+”. Project’s 1st meeting took place in Latvia, Riga, June 5-9, 2016.

At the age of 88, legendary dance artist, Anna Halprin writes: “I am aging. My body is not the same as a twenty-year-old’s, and it doesn’t have the prescribed quality of being in social places. But I think an aged body has its own configurations of beauty.” Continue reading

The closing lab of the current cycle of The Writing Movement Network is taking place in Riga during the Time to Dance festival. This time the network brings together writers from Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Byelorussia.
