I was on the side of informed audience – while standing on the edge of Geysir, the master Geysir, the father of the word “geyser”, – I knew already that it “doesn’t do anything”. When Sesselja said the phrase “it doesn’t do anything” she meant that it is just there, it is hot, but it doesn’t splash, doesn’t go up or sideways, it is just there and it is the reason and origin of all the system around it. It is partly retired now, because it did perform before but now it has stopped doing that. Continue reading

Superficial Look at Nordic Dance Platform ICE HOT (completed)

Superficial Look at Nordic Dance Platform ICE HOT (completed)
Print pagePDF page

Inta Balode

I was in ICE HOT Nordic dance platform seeing „Nordic contemporary dance at its best”. On December 11 I saw 6 performances of total around 315 minutes. Mainly I came to Oslo because The keðja Writing Movement-project launched its catalogue: Expeditions in Dance Writing. Writing Movement 2012-2014, in the foyer at Dansens Hus, Oslo, on the last day of ICE HOT Oslo, December 13 at 08.30 pm. Still no surprise that dance writers sometimes go and see dance performances. On December 12 and 13 I had an intention to see around 12 more performances of total around 600 minutes. So more than 900 minutes or more than 15 hours of sitting and watching other people dance. I ended up with little less, just little. To add around 300 more minutes at least I invented I game I did and you can see bellow. I tried to figure out what dance is like in each of five countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). I  applied five points to all the works I saw (and 2 works I didn’t see but I read about, talked about and saw some videos). I grouped all performances by country. At the end I  summarized texts to see how each country is doing and summarized countries to see how Nordic region is doing. I will get to know what Nordic is. The game got invented because of the optimization reasons – I couldn’t figure out where to find at least 9000 minutes to write short texts about all of them. But the selection of performances on December 11 convinced me that all them deserve attention. Besides I am for democracy. And DANCEPUNKC likes playing games like that. Continue reading

Traumatized by Michelle Boulé’s WONDER and other Americans

Traumatized by Michelle Boulé’s WONDER and other Americans

On April 3rd, 2014 I saw a solo performance WONDER by Michelle Boulé. On May 14th, 2014 I went to listen to Questions and Answers session with Under Secretary of State in Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Richard Stengel. Those two events don’t have much in common except that they are linked to the United States. And the one in May made me get back to the unfinished review/essay I started writing in April. I also liked couple things Richard Stengel said, which is little bit surprising because in most cases in artist communities we are friends with artists of any state and not friends with official politics of any state. Keðja Wilderness Dance in Bebrene

Today, on May 11, 2014 at 15:00 in Bebrene/Dviete there will be a second showing of the outcomes of the keðja Wilderness Dance residences. Norwegian choreographer Ingri Midgard Fiksdal together with Pernille Holden, Ingeleiv Berstad, Eivind Seljeseth and Kristin Helgebostad were in residency in Bebrene from June 13 till July 4, 2013. This year from April 22 till May 12 a group of Finnish artists (Satu Herrala, Eva Muilu, Anna Mustonena, Masi Tiittahave) been living and working in Bebrene. We will see how the showing will go this time, we’ll try to ask people. Meanwhile we are publishing an investigation text about the last year’s performance. As you know very well in small villages it doesn’t matter what really happened, what matters is what people think and say about it. Continue reading

Aliens in Ainaži. About a Wilderness Dance showing

We are all aliens. We come from somewhere we don’t know, we go to somewhere we don’t know and we meet people we don’t know. Four young artists (Lotta Suomi, Ásrún Magnúsdóttir, Austėja Vilkaitytė and Lea Vendelbo Petersen) united under the title of „Foreign Mountain”, came from all those places they are from (Finland, Iceland, Lithuania and Denmark), lived for around a month in Ainaži and performed for me and two my friends, and around 20 more people. We enjoyed the show.

Riga, Umea and European values

Riga, Umea and European values

Inta Balode

The human chain of about 14 000 people standing in the streets of Riga in really freezing day of January 18 and passing books from the old to the new building of the Latvian National Library. Seven Chinese dancers for around and hour dancing in line close to each other in The Sami-Chinese dance project which premiered in Umeo, toured Sweden and I was lucky to see it in Dansens Hus Stockholm on February 15. With politically wrong mind you would think something like that: Latvia’s economy must have gotten so bad that there are no trucks to deliver the books so only simple human labor is the solution; Swedish dance scene and demographic situation is experiencing serious crisis, so the import of Chinese dancers and choreographers has started. Politically correct mind knows that fortunately the issue behind those actions is much brighter – both Riga (Latvia) and Umea (Sweden) are the European Capitals of Culture 2014. However, looking at those two events included in the opening programs of the Capitals of Culture 2014 tempts to speculate on shared/trendy/politically correct European values. Continue reading

Contemporary dance in contact with youth work and non-formal learning

Contemporary dance in contact with youth work and non-formal learning

With warming-up, breaking ice, trying to remember over 20 names of people from nine different countries a seminar for youth workers and dancers / choreographers “Movement as a Learning Opportunity” started on the 1st of March in Tbilisi, Georgia. The seminar is organized by “Anti-violence Network of Georgia” and takes place within the EU program “Youth in Action”. Why would DANCE.LV Journal usually writing about professional contemporary dance events be interested in this seminar? Because it explores and experiences ways how contemporary dance could be used as tool for providing non-formal learning opportunities for youth. How, why, is contemporary dance something that might really work for this purpose is something to figure out during the week. One thing is for sure – a personality who will try to figure it out is really an impressive expert. Continue reading

Tipperary exists

Tipperary exists
Print pagePDF page

Inta Balode

Even if wikipedia says that now in Tipperary live less people than in 1821 the town is real and it looks good and vivid despite the rain. And the line from the song „It’s a long way to Tipperary” I mentioned a day before is the most cliche one and it is used in the tourist brochures and other mainstream printed material. And the brochure, of course, ignores Tipperary Dance Platform which takes place already for the fourth time. „Culture events” in touristic context I guess mostly mean – pure entertainment and the rest of the brain. So I am sorry for using so worn off intro to the Tipperary contemporary dance world which is definetely much less cliche and does amazing things. Continue reading

The keðjaKlaipėda: draft review or what we usually don’t show

The keðjaKlaipėda: draft review or what we usually don’t show
Print pagePDF page

Within the intense program of The keðjaKlaipėda encounter there was also a Writing Movement workshop led by dance scholar from Cecilia Malmstrom Olsson. And as it is in all workshops there were also some tasks. One of the tasks was to go and see a performance and take notes during the performance, i.e., immediately record things, thoughts, words, ideas which come up during the show. And so we did. Our “victim” was dance performance “YES” (“Open Culture”/ LT) performed at the Yachts’ hangar at Cruise Ship Terminal. Choreographers- Raimonda Gudavičiūtė and Mantas Stabačinskas. Dancers – Mantas Stabačinskas and Lina Puodžiukaitė-Lanauskienė. Musician – Snieguolė Mikalauskienė. Premiered in 2009 in Kaunas. Enjoy the very raw and draft into two dance writers’ minds. If it would be final text, a lot of what you see know wouldn’t be there. So this is uncensored, honest stuff, no editing done. Continue reading
