Inta Balode

The article was first published in music magazine “Mūzikas saule” on September 2015. Translation into English by Ilze Millere and Inta Balode

I decided to think about who dances, who thinks and who has power. Power in quite broad sense as influence, superiority and authority often holding hands with financing, visibility and fame. Power that relates also to the education system not as the one stimulating wisdom but as the one keeping the order. Continue reading

Lifelong Dance Practice: Project 45+

With the support from Nordic Culture Point Mobility Programme Network Funding and partners from Estonia and Norway a very nice and cherished for a long time idea of Latvian choreographer Olga Žitluhina became possible. The idea is to bring together dancers and choreographers of the age from 45 years from different countries and do something new and creative with all power of experience and will of project participants. The thought found its realization within a project “Lifelong Dance Practice: Project 45+”. Project’s 1st meeting took place in Latvia, Riga, June 5-9, 2016.

At the age of 88, legendary dance artist, Anna Halprin writes: “I am aging. My body is not the same as a twenty-year-old’s, and it doesn’t have the prescribed quality of being in social places. But I think an aged body has its own configurations of beauty.” Continue reading

Gundija Zandersona

I was given a wonderful opportunity to participate in youth4youth organised weeklong training program Grow conscious and feel your body in Italy. I applied wanting to enrich my inner self, wanting to work on my inability to express certain emotions and improve my listening and responding skills in regards to my body. Training overview outlined the importance of connecting mind, spirit and emotions with the body through meditations, creative tasks and working on bio-energies, as a result growing and performing as a whole. Based on the project title I assumed I would find body awareness training practice useful as a dance artist as well as a spiritual being. I was curious to discover whether exercising the use of energy concentration in specific points of my body would reveal something new about my understanding of performativity and execution of movements. In other words, I was hoping to explore what I would call mindful moving or mindful dancing. Continue reading

Madli Pesti*

In the beginning of golden October the Writing Movement Network met in Iceland, in a small village of Laugarvatn, in the middle of a bare, smoking country. The network brings together dance writers from five countries: Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. The hostess of the event was Sesselja Magnusdottir, dance critic and teacher from Iceland. She confronted us with three essential questions, that at first hearing may sound naive or even banal. But how much do we really go back to the basics and ask us what we are really doing? How often do we take time to ask the why-questions? The roaring rainstorm outside our cosy house and the possibility to look at the endless horizon inspired and stimulated our thinking process. Print pagePDF page

Emerging authors (writers, critics, researchers, theoreticians) and those interested in further professional development in the field of critical practice in contemporary performing arts can advance their writing and discussing skills within the Critical Practice (Made in Yugoslavia). Deadline for applications is February 10, 2015.

This Critical Practice edition draws on the conceptual platforms of performing arts, which have been recently developed at the geographically non-existing territory of Yugoslavia, such as those generated by TkH [Walking Theory], Nomad Dance Academy, Maska, Frakcija etc. It consists of three one-year non-residential programme cycles focused on the education and practical work of participants. Its purpose is to advance the professional development of authors from the region of former Yugoslavia and Europe and to encourage a more profound, more visible and more accessible critical reflection on the contemporary performing arts, enhancing their visibility and stimulating dialogue with audiences. Its concrete outcomes will be articles, essays, reviews and other formats of critical writing published online or in diverse publications, as well as live discussions, interviews and talks with dance and performance makers.
